Interview To Superkids In The World
--The Choirboys-- from UK
The Choirboys are youngsters of today who wear black suits while singing hymns in pure angelic voices.
We asked them about the charm of hymns and their aims in the future.
This is your first visit to Japan. Was it different from what you imagined?
- Ben
- I had imagined that Japan was a country of high technology. But people were
actually friendly and very kind.
- CJ
- Japan is a cheeerful, pleasant place. I want to see a live sumo wrestling match.
- Patrick
- I had an image of the country with beautiful music such as Kojo no tsuki and
Sakura sakura.
Any there any Japanese words you have learned here?
- Ben
- Kon-nichiwaV (Hello) and Sayoo-naraC (Good bye).
- CJ
- Arigatoo (Thank you) is a beautiful word.
- Patrick
Bimyo! A strange sound and interesting. I shall use it when I get back.
[SAKURA: Bimyo is the word of today. We use it when we cannnot decide.
e.g. --Did you like this icecream with a green tea flavour?
--Bimyo!]
Have you ever performed abroad?
- Ben
- Although we have travelled all over the world with our choirs, it's the first time as The Choirboys.
It is different from disciplined choirs, we are allowed to be free here, so we enjoy our time.
But on the other hand, although in the choir we have lots of people to rely on, here
it's just the three Choirboys. We are in a responsible position. We have to trust ourselves
and work hard.
- CJ
- And we usually have to sing in vestments. But as The Choirboys I'm happy to wear
a cool, stylish designer suit.
- Ben
- I have changed my hair style, too! It used to be like "choirboy", now it's cool.
You are interested in fashion . . . any favorite brand or style?
- Ben
- One's appearance relates to first impressions. I'm fond of QuickSilver. As the shop
is long way away, I ask my parents to take me.
- Patrick
- Nike and Adidas. I'm fond of sporty clothes. I usually shop by myself.
- CJ
- Sporty ones as well. Nike and Adidas are nice. I want to shop by myself but it's too far. I ask
my parents.
Are you proud of being selected as The Choirboys?
- CJ
- Really happy. I was so excited when I heard the news.
- Patrick
- I was, too!
- Ben
- Very excited!
How long have you been in the choir?
- Ben
- I joined the local choir when I was 5, and sung in earnest since 8.
- CJ
- I started formally at 8.
- Patrick
- At 7 in my first choir and moved to another at 10.
- Ben
- There are about 60 choirs in England. 40% of them have the boarding schools.
Members board, go to school and practice the hymns.
Which choir are you in?
- Ben
- Southwell Minster Choir.
- CJ, Patrick
- Ely Cathedral Choir.
How long do you practice every day?
- CJ
- About 3 hours!
- Patrick
- Even more before occasions like Easter and Christmas.
Do you get a day off?
- Ben
- Not on Sunday because we have services. Instead, we are off on Wednesdays.
How do you make sure you dont lose those pure voices?
- Ben
- Being careful not to shout.
- CJ
- Not making strange noises.
- Patrick
- Drinking a lot of water.
Don't you raise your voice when you cheer your favorite football teams?
- ALL
- We know it's not good, but we can't help shouting!!
It is said this album could be the only one that you would release. Are you afraid
of your voices breaking?
- Ben
- No. Rather, I'm looking forward to see how it is like.
- CJ
- Not that comes suddenly but gradually.
- Patrick
- I can expect that I will think it is a sign of being a grouwn-up.
Will you continue singing after the break?
- Ben
- As I can already read music, I would like to. I want to study music at the
Royal College. I hope my voice is still good after breaking. As for football,
which I love, I will continue for pleasure.
- CJ
- I want to be a football player, as well as a musician.
- Patrick
- I, too, want to be a football player. But more, I want to be a lawyer...it's
lucrative. As a matter of fact, I don't think I will continue singing.
All of you love football, don't you?
- Patrick
- I was chosen to be the best-striker at the football course I was on.
- CJ
- If I governed the world, I would make it the world of football. I would build shops
and stadiums everywhere and they would be free.
Favorite team?
- CJ
- Arsenal!
- Ben
- Chelsea!
- Patrick
- Spurs!
Other interests?
- Patrick
- TV games. I've got PS2, Game Cube and X-box.
- Ben
- I've got PSP. And I like collecting clothes and goods.
- CJ
- I collect football T-shirts.
Which track do you recommend in your album?
- Ben
- Tears In Heaven and Danny Boy. We dont just sing hymns. We sang
these arranged in our own way.
- Patrick
- The Lord Bless You And Keep You, if you choose one from the hymns.
- CJ
- All of them!
Where did you record?
- Ben
- At All Saints Church in Tooting last summer with the English Chamber Singers
& Players.
- Patrick
- It has a very good acoustic.
You attract us to join a choir. What do you think?
- Ben
- In Japan, you would not be familiar with the choirs, but please try to
join one. You have lots to learn from it.
- CJ
- The choir is disciplined but you can visit overseas and have lots of fun there. You
will get many friends through the choir.
Do you wish to come to Japan again?
- Ben
- In the near future, yes.
Thank you very much for today.
- ALL
- Thank you.
